Best Video Games of All Time Empty
PostSubject: Best Video Games of All Time   Best Video Games of All Time Icon_minitimeSat Jun 14, 2008 3:21 am

Many magazines and websites have created lists of the best video games of all time, as have many gamers, and there's never any real agreement on their order, though we can typically agree on many games that belong somewhere on the list. For me, it's a very difficult task to compose such a list because it's hard for me to select any limited number of games from dozens and dozens of platforms over the past couple decades or so, let alone put them into any meaningful order. Further, there are franchises with several games that feel like they belong on there, like The Legend of Zelda, and it's difficult to pick between a newer and consequently better one or an older, beloved one that was perhaps even more amazing for its time. I will try, and I may very well re-arrange and modify my list in the future.

11) Final Fantasy VI

10) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
The Metroid series has consistently put out nothing but outstanding games, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption stands proudly as the latest and best thus far. Not quite rated as high as some previous Metroid games, namely Super Metroid and the original Metroid Prime (both held with high regard by gamers), it still takes everything that was great about Metroid Prime and builds upon it, making an even larger and better gaming experience. The use of the Wii's motion detection made for the most impressive play control yet seen in a game console.

9) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

8) BioShock

7) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

6) Resident Evil 4
The Resident Evil franchise was growing stale before Resident Evil 4 came along and revived it, taking it back to the drawing board and rebuilding it from the ground up. This outstanding game was buried beneath heaps of praises from all directions and swept up awards left and right, and was the uncontested 2005 Game of the Year. It remains the highest-rated game in the franchise to date and a few years later, after the arrival of several outstanding games, it remains one of the ten highest-rated games of all time.

5) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Quite possibly the best RPG of all time, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion offered gamers a huge sandbox in which to do what they wish how they wish when they wish for whatever reason they wish. There is so much to do in Oblivion that a gamer can easily sink 200 hours into a single character and still have things they can yet do. Never restricted, players can build their character as they see fit with whatever skills appeal to them, and can use them in any combination that they see fit. Non-player characters (NPCs) react with each other and to their environment and live out daily lives, bringing the world to life, unlike the lifeless townfolk that just stand around or aimlessly wander around in other RPGs without purpose.

4) Grand Theft Auto IV
Grand Theft Auto IV isn't the fourth game in the series, but rather the first game from the fourth era of the franchise. Building and improving upon the previous and outstanding titles from the series, GTAIV is an amazing achievement in gaming that really reflects the $200 million that was sunk into developing it. Though not quite as large as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas before it, IV is still massive but far more detailed, really conveying a massive cityscape that feels like a real metropolis.

3) Super Mario Galaxy
Coming from the best-selling franchise of all time and most-recognized mascot of all time, not to mention the franchise that has been most influential to the video game industry over the past two decades, Super Mario Galaxy gives Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Bros. 3 a run for their money, quite possibly taking over those games' places in our hearts. Super Mario Galaxy is the Super Mario Bros. 3 of the 3D Mario titles, and quite a joy to play.

2) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
It's difficult to find a serious list of the greatest games of all time that doesn't have this on it, and lists generally put it at or near the top, and I feel that's exactly where it belongs. Ocarina of Time comes from a long-running franchise spanning many platforms and generations and a franchise with several outstanding titles that have often taken awards and Game of the Year recognition, and Ocarina of Time was even heralded by some as the "Video Game of the Century". Other terrific titles have followed, and even improved over Ocarina of Time, but they haven't managed to capture gamers' hearts quite as well.

1) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Despite all the praise I've already given to Ocarina of Time, the fact remains that Twilight Princess still adds upon and improves upon that masterful formula, making for an even more outstanding game.

Those are some good games, IceMan. I might have picked some different ones to go at the top.
