| Evidently, many PS3 owners that downloaded firmware update 2.40 have had their systems lock up, as well as some lesser issues like their microphones cutting out. This issue isn't limited to one particular SKU, but rather has effected all PS3 packages. Sony has since taken down the update and updated their knowledge center post on the firmware update. - Quote :
- UPDATE: 7/2/2008, the PlayStation 3 system software version 2.40 has been temporarily taken offline and will not be available for download as our engineers examine any possible issues with this update. The Knowledge Center will be updated with information as it becomes available; please check back here for further details.
As of this time, the only fix to the issue is to format PS3's hard drive, which wipes it clean including removing save game data and anything else the owner has put on there unless they have something they can transfer the data to. The alternative is to send their PS3s to Sony for a repair at a cost of $150 to the owner. source: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168527

Well, so is Microsoft. All those millions of Xbox 360s bricked by the dreaded Red Ring of Death is hurting them, not just in the costs of repairing them but also potentially in sales as people are afraid to pay for something they know could die on them six months later. Perhaps it's just bad karma, since all the Sony fanboys have enjoyed mocking the RRoD for so long now and praising Sony in contrast.

| This doesn't sound quite as bad as the rrod. Even if PS3 owners have to lose their game saves and stuff, at least they can still get them working. 360 you have to ship it away and wait for them to send it back, which is for like a month, and you have no Xbox until it gets back. Still it sucks for the PS3 owners that want to keep their save files because they have to pay so much to get their consoles fixed.
Well, I guess the Sony fanboys aren't laughing about bricked hardware now.
